How to Reduce Packaging Costs with PE Shrink Film

Packaging cost is a line item that every production manager watches. The good news: PE shrink film offers several concrete ways to reduce cost without compromising bundle strength or appearance. Here are the most effective levers.

1. Right-Size the Thickness

The biggest cost mistake is over-gauging the film. A 150 micron film for a 6-pack of water bottles is unnecessary and wastes money.

Rule of thumb:

  • Light multipacks (6-12 bottles): 45-60 microns is often sufficient
  • Medium bundles (12-24 bottles): 60-80 microns
  • Heavy industrial packs: 80-150 microns

Test a slightly thinner specification on a sample run. If the bundle holds through transport and looks good on the shelf, you just saved 10-20% on film cost.

2. Optimize Roll Length

Longer rolls mean fewer roll changeovers and less core waste per roll. But there is a tradeoff: very long rolls are heavier, harder to handle, and may cause roll deformation during storage.

For most automatic lines, rolls of 1,500-2,500 meters hit the sweet spot between efficiency and handling.

3. Consolidate Film Sizes

If your line currently runs three different film widths for three products, ask whether one width can cover two SKUs with different sealing parameters. Fewer SKUs means:

  • Lower minimum order quantities per spec
  • Less inventory to manage
  • Fewer changeovers and setup errors

4. Improve Machine Compatibility

Film that runs poorly on your line costs more than the price per kilo. Wasted film from breaks, scrap from misaligned seals, and labor spent troubleshooting all add up.

Invest in film with consistent thickness, clean roll edges, and proper tension. The slightly higher price per kilo pays back in lower scrap rate and fewer stoppages.

5. Buy Direct from the Manufacturer

Trading companies add margin. Working directly with a film manufacturer means:

  • Better pricing at volume
  • Direct technical support
  • Faster custom specification changes
  • No middleman markup

6. Bulk Ordering and Annual Contracts

If your monthly consumption is stable, a rolling monthly forecast with a supplier locks in pricing and secures supply. Annual volume commitments usually yield 5-15% better pricing.

7. Minimize Film Waste

  • Set the correct film width — overhang should be minimal
  • Ensure proper sealing temperature — too hot burns film, too cold wastes material on re-runs
  • Keep rolls properly stored — blocked or deformed film goes straight to scrap

Quick Cost Checklist

  • [ ] Am I using the minimum acceptable thickness?
  • [ ] Are my roll sizes optimized for my line speed?
  • [ ] Can I consolidate film SKUs?
  • [ ] Is my scrap rate tracked and measured?
  • [ ] Am I buying direct from a manufacturer?
  • [ ] Do I have a volume-based pricing agreement?
