TL;DR — Coverage Calculator. Three quick conversions for buyers of protective film and shrink film: mil ↔ micron (1 mil = 25.4 μm), square feet ↔ square metres (1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft), and a roll-count estimator (coverage = roll width × roll length; add 10–15% lap). All figures are engineering unit conversions and planning estimates only — your actual roll width, length and specs are confirmed on the spec sheet once we know your application. How many rolls do I need for 1,000 sq ft?
It depends on the roll you buy. Coverage per roll = roll width × roll length. For example, a typical 36 inch wide × 200 ft long carpet-protection roll covers about 600 sq ft, so 1,000 sq ft needs roughly 2 rolls before lap allowance, and about 2–3 rolls once you add 10–15% overlap. Use the estimator below with your actual width and length to get a number for your pallet.
1. Thickness converter: mil ↔ micron
This is a fixed unit definition, not a brand-specific spec: 1 mil = 0.001 inch = 25.4 micrometres (μm). Type a number in either box and press the button.
2. Area converter: sq ft ↔ m²
Defined units: 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft and 1 sq ft = 0.092903 m². Useful when you receive a quote in metric but plan a job in square feet, or vice versa.
3. Roll-count estimator: how many rolls for my job?
Formula used: coverage per roll = roll width × roll length, then rolls = ceiling(job area ÷ coverage per roll). We recommend adding 10–15% lap / wastage for edge overlap, cuts and installation error — this is a planning rule of thumb, not a product spec.
Worked examples
- Example A — 1,000 sq ft of floor protection. Roll = 36 in wide × 200 ft long. Coverage = 3 × 200 = 600 sq ft per roll. 1,000 ÷ 600 = 1.67 → 2 rolls before lap. With 12% lap: 1,000 × 1.12 = 1,120 sq ft ÷ 600 = 1.87 → 2 rolls.
- Example B — 500 m² of profile protection. Roll = 1.0 m wide × 100 m long. Coverage = 100 m² per roll. 500 ÷ 100 = 5 rolls. With 10% lap: 500 × 1.10 = 550 ÷ 100 = 5.5 → 6 rolls.
- Example C — 2,000 sq ft of carpet protection on a jobsite. Roll = 24 in wide × 200 ft long. Coverage = 2 × 200 = 400 sq ft. 2,000 ÷ 400 = 5 rolls. With 15% lap: 2,000 × 1.15 = 2,300 ÷ 400 = 5.75 → 6 rolls.
Disclaimer: These calculators convert engineering units (mil, micron, square foot, square metre) and give a rough planning estimate for roll count. They do not quote price, MOQ or lead time. Your actual roll width, length, thickness and adhesion are confirmed on the spec sheet for your substrate and application.
