Hello everyone, I am Wally, a blogger with extensive experience in the production, technical management, and sales of protective films. I am skilled in providing customized solutions based on customer needs.

Both PE shrink film and stretch film are made from polyethylene, both come on rolls, and both hold products together on pallets. But they work in completely different ways — and choosing the wrong one costs money, time, and damaged goods.

The Core Difference

PE Shrink Film Stretch Film
How it works Shrinks when heated Stretched and clings
Heat required Yes (shrink tunnel) No
Tightness Conforms tightly to product Wraps loosely around load
Appearance Tight, retail-ready Functional, industrial
Best for Multipacks, retail bundles Pallet loads, bulk shipping
Equipment Shrink tunnel + sealer Pallet wrapper

When to Use Shrink Film

Choose shrink film when:

  • You are packaging individual multipacks (6-pack water, 12-pack cans)
  • The product needs a clean, retail-ready appearance
  • You want to bundle multiple units into one sellable pack
  • The bundle goes to a store shelf, not just a warehouse pallet
  • You need branding or printing on the pack

When to Use Stretch Film

Choose stretch film when:

  • You are securing a pallet load for transport
  • You need protection against dust and moisture
  • The load goes directly from warehouse to truck
  • No retail display is involved
  • You want a lower-cost, no-heat solution

Can You Use Both?

Yes — many companies use both:

  1. Shrink film bundles individual product packs (e.g., 12-bottle water packs)
  2. Stretch film wraps those packs onto a pallet for shipping

This is the standard supply chain for bottled beverages worldwide.

Cost Comparison

Factor Shrink Film Stretch Film
Film cost per kg Similar Similar
Equipment cost Shrink tunnel + sealer required Pallet wrapper required
Energy cost High (tunnel heating) Low
Labor Semi-automated Semi-automated
Material per pack Higher (full wrap) Lower (stretched thin)

Quick Decision Guide

Use shrink film if: Your product is bottled water, cans, food multipacks, or anything sold individually on a shelf.

Use stretch film if: You are wrapping pallets of finished goods for shipping and storage.

Use both if: You sell multipacked products that also need pallet stabilization.
