Bottled water is one of the most demanding applications for PE shrink film. Products are heavy, packs are high-volume, and margins are thin — so every roll needs to run cleanly, look good, and protect the product through distribution.

Why Bottled Water Uses PE Shrink Film

Bottled water multipacks (6-pack, 12-pack, 24-pack) require film that:

  • Holds heavy PET bottles securely through palletizing and transport
  • Shrinks tightly in high-speed tunnels
  • Performs on automatic bundling machines
  • Costs less per pack than cardboard boxes

Recommended Thickness

Pack Type Bottle Size Recommended Thickness
6-pack 500ml 45-55 microns
12-pack 500ml 50-65 microns
24-pack 500ml 60-80 microns
12-pack 1.5L 65-85 microns
6-pack 1.5L 55-70 microns

These are starting points. Exact thickness depends on your shrink tunnel temperature, conveyor speed, and bottle design.

Film Width

Film width depends on the bundle dimensions:

  • Measure the circumference of the bundled bottles
  • Add 20-40 mm for seal overlap and side fin
  • The film should cover the bundle tightly without excessive overhang

For a standard 12-pack of 500ml bottles, typical film width is 380-450 mm in layflat format.

Shrink Requirements

Bottled water bundles need:

  • TD shrinkage of 15-25% to hug the bottle sides
  • MD shrinkage of 8-15% for tight top and bottom
  • Shrink temperature of 150-180°C in the tunnel

Roll Length and Core

For high-speed bottling lines:

  • Roll length: 1,500-3,000 meters to minimize changeovers
  • Core: 3 inch (76 mm) standard
  • Jointless rolls available for uninterrupted production

Common Problems in Bottled Water Packaging

Loose bundles after shrinking — Insufficient shrink ratio, tunnel temperature too low, or line speed too fast.

Film breaks on high-speed lines — Thickness inconsistency, weak film edges, or sharp product contact points.

Excessive side fins — Film width too wide for the bundle size.

Cloudy appearance — Film thickness too low or tunnel temperature too high causing over-shrink.

Quality Checklist for Water Film

  • [ ] Clear, transparent appearance
  • [ ] Consistent thickness across web
  • [ ] Clean roll edges, no telescoping
  • [ ] No odor or contamination
  • [ ] Proper shrink at tunnel temperature
  • [ ] Good seal strength
  • [ ] Runs without breaks at production speed

Request a Sample for Your Line

Every bottling line is different. The best way to confirm a specification is to test a sample roll on your actual machine.

[Contact us](/contact/) with:

  • Your bottle size and pack configuration
  • Current film specification (if any)
  • Shrink tunnel temperature and line speed

We will recommend the right PE shrink film and send a sample for evaluation.
